In early August, Jimmie Johnson, seven-time Cup champion and driver of the number 48 Lowe's Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, joined Mark Reuss, Executive Vice President of GM Global Development, to present the Camaro ZL1 as Chevrolet's new Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series racecar.
The Camaro ZL1 will make its competition debut during next February's Daytona Speedweeks, as the 2018 NASCAR season kicks off. Chevrolet engineers optimized the vehicle's aerodynamic performance so that the Camaro ZL1 can carry on the winning legacy of the Chevrolet SS, which has locked down 70 Cup wins to date.
The 2018 Camaro ZL1 builds of off the vehicle's track-focused heritage to deliver all the performance you could want, as a supercharged V8 engine generates an engaging 650 horsepower.
In a nod to history, the Camaro ZL1 race car shown in the video is wearing the number 8 -- which was Louis Chevrolet's racing number.
In a press release, Reuss commented, "Chevrolet, Camaro and ZL1 are all synonymous with winning, both on and off the track. We are thrilled to run Camaro in NASCAR next year, with the time-honored and track-tested ZL1 badge, and we’re just as excited for our drivers, teams, fans and customers."
